Needs and Wants

This is the same game Carrie posted on her blog. I typed in "Heidi needs" and then "Heidi wants" in google. They are pretty funny!

Heidi needs...

Heidi needs a day off! (Ain't that the truth!!)
Heidi needs someone to love her. ( I already have someone who loves me! :))
Heidi needs a lifeboat. (Sure!)
Heidi needs to know that every man she meets is drooling over her. (Hmm... not so much!!)
Heidi needs her own site.
Heidi needs a lift.
Heidi needs a breast augmentation. (No, thanks! But how 'bout a butt reduction!)

Heidi wants...

Heidi wants "more". (of what??)
Heidi wants to silence all science that does not agree with her liberal views... (I think it's the other way around!)
Heidi wants to meet 8 people. (Okay.)
Heidi wants a pizza with bell peppers and pineapple. (Now that's more like it! Maybe not with pineapple though and add some meat, baby!!)

This was fun, thanks Carrie!

Prom night!

We went to the Prom on Saturday night!!

My husband is Assistant Principal at a very small low-income high school. He was in charge of putting together Prom this year! This was a huge deal for him because he had never done anything like this before. The past 10 years or so the students had gone to the Elks Lodge and the girls wore regular dresses and the boys wore jeans and button-up shirts!! Come on...to the Prom?? Sid (hubby) was determined to change this. He planned and delegated jobs to various people and it turned out AWESOME!! I am so proud of him! The venue this year was an art gallery. There was catered food with servers (they are used to going to McDonalds for dinner before Prom!!) and a DJ. Since the students couldn't afford to buy dresses or suits or tuxes they were able to get dresses donated and the students had 3 car washes at the high school and raised almost $700 to help pay. Teachers and some parents also donated $$ to help. The students were on their best behavior, looked GREAT and had so much fun!! This is something they had never done before. At proms in the past there were only about 20 students who attended. This year there were 62 out of 70 students!!! Yay!! I hope this helps the morale of the school because they need it so bad. What great memories for them!

Character and Integrity

Today was one of those days at work. I am a Special Ed. assistant. I work directly with a "special" student who has ADHD, Autism, and behavior issues. Also, a colleague of mine is a very challenging person. Some things happended today that weigh heavy on my heart. I often wonder why I am in this place of employment. Why did God put me there? I am quickly reminded that I need to be there, not only to help others but to build my own character. To gain integrity. This is something we all need. If we aren't being challenged, how will we grow? The process isn't always easy but in the end it is all worth it. This is what gets me through the days and the weeks. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate my job, it is just difficult sometimes. I am thankful I have a job.

In the book Bedside Blessings, Charles Swindoll writes, "Nothing speaks louder or more powerfully than a life of integrity...Nothing stands the test of time like solid character...You can handle the blast like a steer in a blizzard. The ice may form on your horns, but you keep standing against the wind and the howling, raging storm because Christ is at work in your spirit. Character will always win the day. As Horace Greeley wrote: "Fame is a vapor, popularity an accident, riches take wing, and only character endures.""

Not his time to go...

After reading the fabulous Carrie Postma's blog, I decided to do the same blog challenge:

"As we reflect on the resurrection of our Lord, write a post that celebrates life."

I am going to tell the story of our miracle baby, Brendan. Some of you already know the story but I have never written it all down including some of my thoughts and feelings at the time.

It all started on July9, 1999. Brendan was born 2 weeks late and weighed 8 lbs. 5 oz. We were so happy to have such a big healthy baby boy!

The first week of his life was going fine and then when he was 7 days old things changed. He kept crying and I tried everything to console him but nothing was working so we took him to the pediatrician. Right when she saw him, the dr. said he didn't look normal. He had a fever and this was not okay for a baby this young. They did a spinal tap and there was blood in his spinal fluid. The doctor said no wonder he cries all the time, he has a spinal headache (very painful). She immediately sent us to the hospital. They ran tests and found 2 bleeds in his brain. They said he had some kind of infection. We were freaking out! What??? He also had really bad jaundice and had to be in an incubator under lights for a few days. I could only take him out to feed him. I stayed with him the whole time. Sid had to work and take care of Aaron, who was 22 months. I would put my hand through the holes in the incubator to touch him and comfort him. It was so hard not to be able to hold him. You could tell he was so uncomfortable. He had tubes hooked up to him so it was hard to move him when I had to feed him. After the few days in the hospital, the drs. said the infection was gone and we could go home but we had to keep monitoring him. We went home and within a few days Brendan's head was beginning to get larger and larger. It turns out he had hydracephalus, which is build-up of brain fluid. The drs. said it was from the blood clotting and not letting the fluid through. Then he told us that Brendan needed to have brain surgery and have a shunt put in to drain the fluid. We were in shock. He was only a week and a half old at this point. I remember signing papers that stated that we understood that death could be a possible result from the surgery. We couldn't believe what we were signing.

When the day of the surgery came, Brendan couldn't eat for 12 hours before. Could you imagine a two week old baby not being able to eat for that long??? All he could do was suck on a pacifier. He sucked so hard he got a huge canker sore on his gums! :( Handing him off to the surgeons to take him in was the hardest, most heart-wrenching thing I have had to do in my whole life! We told them to please take care of him. As we waited the 2 1/2 hours, Sid and I just sat in the waiting room crying and praying. I remember looking up verses in my bible and writing them down to help me get through it. I prayed to God to please not take him yet. The surgery went well and we went home a few days later.

A few more weeks went by and the shunt the drs. had put in malfunctioned so Brendan had a 2nd surgery. This surgery was much easier on us and him than the last. It went fine and a few more weeks went by.

One day when Brendan was about 2 months old, I noticed he was having seizures, so we took him to the emergency room. We found out that he had 2 more bleeds in his brain. Are you kidding me??? He was then put in the NICU for a few days and monitered very closely. I remember the nurses saying he was the "big boy" because he was in there with babies where some were less than 3lbs. The drs. couldn't understand why he kept having these bleeds in his brain. They sent us up to OHSU in Portland to have all kinds of tests done on him. They all came up with nothing. All the drs. were baffled. They had never seen anything like it...a full term baby with such problems.

Since that time, Brendan has had no more bleeds or seizures and only needed to have physical therapy for a few months because of stiffness. Eventhough all the bleeds were in different areas of his brain, the only effects are bad eyesight in one eye and stuttering. He is an absolute miracle straight from God! We celebrate his life everyday.

Happy Easter!!

Happy Easter everyone!!

I'm finally bloggin!! Yay! I'm such a slacker when it comes to this!!

I am excited because we went to a new church today and it was so GREAT!! As always, it felt good to be in the Word, but we are so glad because I think we finally found our church "home". There are a lot of young couples there and the boys really enjoyed the childrens' church. It is a new church ( a few weeks old). So we are excited to be some of the first people to attend. This leaves so many oppotunities to serve. (Not that we couldn't anywhere else) but they just need so much help getting things going like bible studies, prayer groups, etc. We have been searching for months and it so happens that this church is right down the road!! Praise God! He really does answer prayers!

On a not-so-fun note: My dad is going in for a colonoscopy tomorrow. He is really nervous. He has had gastrointestinal problems for as long as I can remember. I think my cousin's situation with cancer scared him into finally going to get checked out. He has been saying for a while that he thinks he has cancer but if you know my dad you would know that he is very pessimistic! I pray that all his tests come out fine.

Hope you are all having a FANTASTIC Easter and are enjoying some fun family time today!

HE IS RISEN!!!
